Overview

After eons, I learned the truth. Kronika was not alone. She was one of many Titans, each more powerful and ancient than the Elder Gods.

Scorpion in his ending narration for Mortal Kombat 11

The Titans are a race of primordial beings that predate the Elder Gods, other races and the Realms themselves but emerged after The One Being. They first appeared in Mortal Kombat 11 with the main antagonist Kronika stated to be one of the Titans.

The Titans are far superior to the Elder Gods in terms of power and influence. The existence of the Titans is known by few, such as Raiden and Shao Kahn, the latter believing them to be fictitious before encountering Kronika. However, unlike the other races that can be resurrected, the Titans can only exist for only one time. According to Geras, once a Titan is destroyed, they cannot return back to life; thus permanently being eradicated from their existence.

With the establishment of multiple timelines, it is revealed in Mortal Kombat 1 that every timeline features a character in the series that ascended to the status of a Titan, all at some point in time gaining control of The Hourglass and becoming their timeline's respective Keeper of Time.

List of Known Titans

Despite there being an infinite number of Titans within the multiverse, only a few have actually made appearances and impacted the Story as a whole. These include the following;

  • Kronika - formerly Keeper of Time in 2nd Timeline
  • Liu Kang - formerly Titan and Keeper of Time in 2nd and 3rd Timeline
  • Shang Tsung - Titan from 2nd Timeline that traveled to the 3rd Timeline
  • Havik - Variant from an Unknown Timeline

These Titans, although appearing in Mortal Kombat 1, don't have as significant a role as the previous list

  • Kitana - Alternate variant from the 2nd Timeline
  • Raiden - Alternate variant from the 2nd Timeline
  • Kung Lao - Alternate variant from the 2nd Timeline
  • Quan Chi - Variant from an Unknown Timeline

Trivia

  • The concept of the Titans comes from Greco/Roman mythology, in which the Titans are the older deities that preceded the Olympian Gods, being the children of the Primordial Gods Gaia/Terra and Uranos/Caelus.
  • While Kronika appears to be humanoid in appearance and size, the other Titans that appear in the Tower Endings are different.
    • The male Titan that appears in Scorpion's ending is a large armored giant with a helmet that obscures most of his face.
    • A recurring Titan in both Sonya and Shang Tsung's ending is a colossal cephalopod-like monster with a red aura. Sonya says it's an "Omnideity" and from an unpronounceable realm. Given its sea creature-like appearance and status, it could be a reference to the Outer Gods from the Cthulhu Mythos.
    • A female Titan in Shang Tsung's ending is a giant, beautiful woman with a dark body that resembles the night sky, wearing a large crown.
    • A monstrous Titan that also appears in Shang Tsung's ending is a large grey three-eyed beast with a gaping mouth and spikes.
  • Although a Titan variant of Quan Chi appears in the ending of Mortal Kombat 1's Story Mode alongside Shang Tsung, a Titan variant of Havik appears in the post-credit scene.
    • This variant of Havik serves as the main antagonist of the Khaos Reigns Story Mode expansion.
