Mortal Kombat Wiki

The Special Forces was initially formed in the United States of America as the United States Special Forces with the goal of stopping international crime gangs, in particular the Red Dragon and Black Dragon clans. By the time of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the organization has become the Earthrealm Special Forces; while it was still an anti-crime organization, its mandate had expanded to defending all of Earthrealm against other dimensional invasions, such as by the Tekunin and other threats to Earthrealm as of whole.

The game that includes the Special Forces as the main protagonists is Mortal Kombat: Special Forces for the PlayStation. Kano and Jarek of the Black Dragon are the organization's main enemies.

The Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) was something of a successor to the original U.S. Special Forces, as many members of the U.S. Special Forces later join the OIA. The OIA later became the Earthrealm Special Forces. Sonya Blade convinced her Special Forces officers to create the OIA after being attacked by Outworlders.

Mortal Kombat: Special Forces

Before the events of the first Mortal Kombat, the Special Forces' primary focus was to counter the efforts of international crime gangs such as the Black Dragon. An agent named Jackson "Jax" Briggs was assigned to capture several Black Dragon members (No Face, Jarek, Tasia, Tremor) who have been freed from a Special Forces maximum security facility by their leader, Kano. Upon arriving at the scene, Jax finds his fellow comrades killed by the escaped prisoners. He seeks revenge against the Black Dragon members while at the same time completing the mission assigned to him by his superior, to capture the escaped prisoners and prevent Kano from claiming the Eye of Chitian. He travels through multiple places from an abandoned warehouse claimed by the gang and underground sewers to corporate skyscrapers and the lost city of Sin Kiang to eliminate the four prisoners. He then reaches a portal where he is transported to an unknown place (presumably Outworld) where he has his final showdown with Kano. Jax manages to defeat Kano and prevent him from claiming the Eye of Chitian and safely returns back to base. The fate of the artifact is currently unknown, although it is likely that it was confiscated by the Special Forces given the fact that they dispatched "experts" to handle the situation before Jax intervened on his behalf.

Mortal Kombat

The Special Forces are pursuing their enemies once again, and a new agent is introduced. Lieutenant Sonya and her SF comrades are on a high speed chase in Hong Kong where four criminals of the Black Dragon (including their leader) are heading for Shang Tsung's Island for the purpose of claiming the land and its riches from its ancient master, Shang Tsung. They drop off Kano to a nearby bay where the boat transporting fifty warriors to the island is about to sail away. Sonya and her fellow partner, Jake, manages to follow Kano to the docks where he is plotting an ambush on them using his plasma gun. He uses it to shoot Sonya but fails to do so as she dodges it. However, he manages to shoot several oil barrels behind Sonya causing an explosion that covers his escape, allowing him to jump aboard the sail barge headed for the tournament that will be the doom of many warriors, save for a few chosen ones.

Not swayed by her failure, Sonya manages to follow the boat alongside her fellow soldiers but they are all captured by Shang Tsung's forces who force them to participate in the tournament with their lives at stake. The tournament begins and Sonya alongside many other kombatants must now fight to the death in Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat II

Following the loss of Outworld's champions to Liu Kang, Shang Tsung unleashes his forces on Earthrealm's champions, including Sonya Blade, an agent of the Special Forces. Alongside Johnny Cage and Kano, they battle Goro on a bridge located in The Pit. Shang Tsung's defeat causes the island to self-destruct, prompting the warriors to escape the island.

Before the island could blow up, Sonya teams up with Kano to escape the island. They find their way to a forest outside of Shokan, a city located in Outworld where they attempt to establish communications with the Special Forces. Due to the immeasurable distance between the two realms, the signal is extremely poor and there is little time to spare for communication, so she uses the time to send a distress signal.

Back in Earthrealm, the Special Forces receive a distress signal originating from the East China Sea. A boat is dispatched to investigate the signal and they manage to find Cage floating alongside several debris of Shang Tsung's island. The search team rescues Cage and brings him back to their secret base where he is subject to interrogation. His interrogator is Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs and Agent Beran who asks him about the situation and whereabouts of Sonya. Cage explains to the agents that she has teamed up with Kano to find their way back to Earthrealm which Jax hesitates to believe in. He releases the actor and gives him the benefit of doubt until he gathers more evidence, threatening him with violence once he gains it.

Jax and the team attempt to trace the signal they received from Sonya. The connection is choppy but they manage to reach out to their fellow comrade in distress. Sonya warns the team that the two warriors, Liu Kang and Johnny Cage are in danger and they must get to them before Outworld's forces does. Losing the signal, Jax quickly dispatches himself and his team to Cage's location to rescue him.

The team tracks down and arrives at the studio where Cage is currently residing in. He is shooting a cologne commercial when a portal suddenly opens behind him, with Shang Tsung and several of Outworld champions by his side. The treacherous sorcerer blasts him with flames that crashes him into the reception room where Jax and Beran are requesting the presence of the actor. A deadly fight between the Special Forces and the champions of Outworld ensues before Raiden intervenes and forces Shang and his warriors to leave as he leaves an ominous message regarding the upcoming tournament.

The death of his partner Beran, Sonya being MIA and the dire threat of an interrealm invasion from Outworld motivates Jax to participate in the tournament.
