That screech is a real turn-on.

—Kabal, sarcastically, regarding Nitara, Mortal Kombat

Nitara is a character in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. Nitara is portrayed by Mel Jarnson with additional attributes portrayed through visual effects.

Biography

The beautiful vampire Nitara was one of the many Outworld Champions brought together by Shang Tsung to prevent Earthrealm's participation in the upcoming Mortal Kombat Tournament. She, alongside Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Kabal, and General Reiko stormed Raiden's Temple to eliminate them after the barrier that protected the Temple was sabotaged by Kano. Nitara tried to ambush Kung Lao, only to be killed by him using Razor-Rimmed Hat to perform Razor's Edge on her.

Combat Characteristics

Nitara fights as a aerial kombatant, circling her opponent before attacking and using her screech to confuse her opponent of her location, making her much more unpredictable. She is, however, an easy kombatant to defend against, as she does not possess any supernatural strengths or durability. Additionally, her animalistic-like attacking allowed Kung Lao to easily kill the vampire.

Unlike her video game counterpart, Nitara does not utilize her blood abilities, again relying on animalistic attacks to kombat her opponents.

Trivia

  • It is worth noting that among those characters from games, Reiko and Nitara are the only two who have not been introduced as playable characters since the 2011 game that serves as the reboot of the franchise. Additionally, both of them are introduced to the Mortal Kombat franchise since Mortal Kombat 4, in which Reiko makes his first appearance. The writer Greg Russo stated that Nitara appears in the film because he is a fan and felt that she was never really given much of a spotlight to shine.[1]
    • Of the two, Reiko is present in the alternate timeline due to his appearances in the Mortal Kombat X Comic Series, however he has finally appeared as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1, set in the new timeline.
  • Unlike her video game counterpart, whose alignment is neutral, the film version of Nitara is evil. Regarding this change, Greg Russo felt like she could be a natural fit for that team as he came up with the idea that Shang Tsung is able to manipulate anyone really that he has dominated over the years.[1]
  • Elissa Cadwell was originally cast to play as Nitara, but for unknown reasons was replaced by Mel Jarnson.

"Nitara is in there because of me, yes," Russo said. "I chose to put that character in there. I thought she was a lot of fun. I thought she was never really given any much of a spotlight to shine, and so we were looking to kind of pad the Outworld roster a little bit, and we were looking for characters... Even though she's neutral in the source material, the idea that Shang Tsung is able to manipulate anyone really that he has dominated over the years, felt like she could be a natural fit for that team."”
