The Macuahuitl is an Ancient Aztec weapon that is used by Kotal Kahn. The name is derived from the Nahuatl language and means "hand-wood". Use of the macuahuitl as a weapon is attested from the first millennium CE. By the time of the Spanish conquest the macuahuitl was widely distributed in Mesoamerica. The weapon was used by different civilisations including the Aztec (Mexicas), Maya, Mixtec and Toltec.
Macuahuimeh were often made of wood with several embedded prismatic blades made of obsidian. The base looks similar to a wooden club. The only difference between the club and the macuahuitl's base is that the macuahuitl's base has grooves engraved into it to hold the prismatic blades.
In Mortal Kombat 11, Macanas are Kotal Kahn's signature weapon and can be used regardless of the variation made. Different variants of the weapon are available through the game's gear Kustomization, with some designs being proper macuahuimeh to huge swords of Osh-Tekk design. He makes great use of his Macana in the Story Mode, using it to clash with Shao Kahn and his Wrath Hammer.
- The macuahuitl was originally used by the Aztec military forces and several other precolombian Mesoamerican cultures.
- The Macuahuitl's blades were said to be sharp enough to decapitate a human and horse in one swing, making it a very dangerous weapon, at the cost of being very fragile.
