Geras Hourglass

Geras, with a model of the Hourglass

The Hourglass, once referred to as Kronika's Hourglass, is one of the most powerful artifacts in the Mortal Kombat universe. It is crucial to the flow of time and the fates of everyone, as poor usage and damage can bring about the end of not just the timeline, but reality itself.

History[]

Created at an unknown time, the Titaness Kronika, mother of the Elder Gods Cetrion and Shinnok became the Keeper of Time, monitoring the timeline with the Hourglass, forging the destinies of every being within each timeline. When a timeline does not fit to Kronika's liking, she erases it using the power of the Hourglass and begins forging a new one.

Established in Mortal Kombat 11, Kronika has restarted the timelines on multiple occasions, as she plans to restart it once again due to Raiden's actions in altering the timeline and the beheading of her son, Shinnok. She attempts to recruit allies by merging the past and present timelines, making deals with anyone in an attempt to create her New Era for the ultimate goal of balance, something that later drove her insane.

Not everyone is affected by the Hourglass, such as other deities like Raiden, Cetrion and later Liu Kang after he ascends to God-hood. As a fixed point in time, Geras is also unaffected by the Hourglass, as he has a smaller control over time than compared to Kronika.

The Void is a dimension outside the Hourglass's power, thus, anyone placed there is unaffected by anyone who operates it.

Trivia[]

  • Inside the Hourglass flow the literal Sands of Time, with both the sands and the hourglass itself commonly used visual metaphor used to represent the passage of time itself across various media.
  • In most endings, the Hourglass transforms the user's body and clothing as they become Keeper of Time.
    • Despite all endings giving the winner freedom to rewrite history with the Hourglass, none of them depict the victor with the Crown as Aftermath reveals its necessity to control it despite it being left behind after her death.
      • Even more confusing is that Fujin, Sheeva and Robocop - characters introduced in Aftermath where this plot point was revealed - do not wear the Crown in their endings when they use the Hourglass.
