—Fujin to Cetrion in Mortal Kombat 11

Fujin (風神) is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. He made his debut in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as a boss (although was never mentioned by name), and first became playable in Mortal Kombat 4.

Fujin returned as a DLC character in the Aftermath Story Mode DLC in Mortal Kombat 11, marking his return to the franchise as a playable character for the first time in almost 14 years.

About Fujin

First appearing as an unnamed boss in the adventure title Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Fujin made his debut in the main fighting series of games during Mortal Kombat 4 portrayed as the God of Wind. Along with Raiden, Fujin is another character in the series to have originated from Japanese religion, based on the Shinto god of the wind of the same name. He appears as a tall, ageless, muscular human with long white hair bound in a ponytail and glowing white eyes. The back of his Mortal Kombat 4 costume features the Chinese character 空, whose most relevant translation to English is air or sky. As expected, he has a great variety of wind-oriented attacks at his disposal. Although more indifferent and abstract in character than Raiden, Fujin is also depicted as being concerned with the fate of Earthrealm.

In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin is revealed to be Raiden's younger brother.[1] At some point in time, Fujin left the Sky Temple to live among the humans, much to Raiden's chagrin. His time with them had changed his attitude, becoming a far more humble and approachable person than his brother, sharing in their delights and sorrows. He serves as a beacon of hope to the forces of Earthrealm as he helps to inspire and uplift their spirits with his far more optimistic view of life. In particular, he found a kindred spirit in Jax, whose scars he relates to more than anyone else.

Appearance

Taking on the form of a mortal man, Fujin appears as a dark-skinned man with slicked back white hair tied into a ponytail and eyes similar to Raiden. He wore a black vest and green pants with boots. In his debut, Fujin wore a red cape, but was discarded afterward. Interesting to note in Mythologies that his in-game sprite depicts him with blue pants and a black headband, neither of which are used in later 3D renditions.

Following his return in Armageddon, he wears a more detailed version of his original clothing with shoulder guards added. His hair is no longer slicked back with bangs framing his face and his hair longer, extended into a long braid with three hairpieces.

Fujin reappears in Mortal Kombat X's Story mode. His vest and belt are now of tooled black leather edged in red and accented with metal rings, as well as matching armlets. He retains shoulder guards and lacks a cape. His braid is held back with a narrow leather headband, looped through rings.

In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin's default outfit features a heavily updated version of his MK4 outfit with embellishments from his Armageddon design. He also bears a glowing tattoo of his namesake on his shoulder. Another of his outfits gives him white flowing robes with more intricate glowing markings covering his arms. His third outfit is loosely based on his Mythologies depiction though with a shorter, tattered cape and short, slicked back hair.

Combat characteristics

Powers and abilities

Fujin is in complete control of all things related to wind. He can levitate by manipulating the wind around him, allowing him to strike the opponent from a safe distance. He can also send miniature tornadoes at his opponents that spin them around several times and leave them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. Additionally, he can levitate the opponent and slam them down on the ground and surround himself into a tornado to heave them towards him. Considering that many of these moves can potentially leave the foe open for a free hit, Fujin has proven to be a supremely powerful fighter on par with that of fellow god Raiden. Fujin is also an immortal God much like Raiden, he can't die as was proven in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero where he literally created a tornado so large it ripped his body apart and then returned shortly (off-screen) after that as seen in MK4.

In Mortal Kombat 11, he is now armed with a sword and uses it in tandem with its scabbard while using his wind powers to send it flying and slashing at his enemies from a distance. His wind powers have also been expanded upon, trapping opponents in vacuums, shooting invisible air bullets from his fists and even sucking the oxygen out of his opponent and weaponizing it. He is also able to walk on literal thin air, giving him a massive aerial advantage over his opponent which cements his status as the true God of Wind.

Signature moves

  • Rising Knee: Fujin would fly and hit his opponent three times with his knees. (MK4, MKG)
  • Gusting Cyclone: Fujin spins like a tornado which sucks the opponent in and throws them to the other side. (MK4, MKG, MK:A)
  • Air Funnel: Fujin uses a gust of wind to lift his opponent and slam them down. (MK4, MKG, MK:A)
  • Wind Kick: While airborne, Fujin comes down and kicks the opponent. In MK4 and MKG, Fujin can make two kicks. (MK4, MKG, MK:A)
  • Tornado Wind: Fujin launches a small tornado at the opponent, causing them to spin around wildly and setting them up for an additional combo. (MK:A)
  • Krossbow Blast: Fujin pulls out his crossbow and shoots a bolt forward. (MK11)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin either shoot another bolt and perform an zig-zagging shot aimed upwards or downwards.
  • Up Krossbow Blast: Fujin pulls out his crossbow and shoots a zig-zagging bolt upwards. (MK11)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin either shoot another bolt forward and perform an zig-zagging shot aimed upwards or downwards.
  • Down Krossbow Blast: Fujin pulls out his crossbow and shoots a zig-zagging bolt downwards. (MK11)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin either shoot another bolt forward and perform an zig-zagging shot aimed upwards or downwards.
  • Wind Kicks: Fujin flies forward while spinning around and kicking. This attack has armor-breaking properties. (MK11)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin use wind to slash the opponent with his sword while hovering mid-air.
  • Tornado: Fujin hops forward or backwards with a powerful wind vortex around him, covering the entire vertical space above. (MK11)
    • Twister: Amplifying the move has Fujin move forward or backwards with the vortex still around him. The move can be amplified twice. This ability conflicts with Air Slam when equipped, disabling the option to select Air Slam. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Warped Needle: Fujin thrusts forward with his sword while spinning it with powerful gusts of wind. This ability replaces Wind Kicks when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin leap forward with an overhead sword swing.
  • Sky Wakka: Fujin jumps upwards and starts running on air, able to use follow-up moves. This ability conflicts with Divine Wind when equipped, disabling the option to select Divine Wind. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin form a vortex around his legs that he uses to fly forward and hit the opponent.
    • Fujin can cancel out of this move at the cost of one defensive meter.
    • Flying Sword: Fujin thrusts forward with his sword.
      • Amplifying the move has Fujin slash the opponent three times.
    • Dive Kick: Fujin dives down from the air and attacks his opponent.
      • Amplifying the move has Fujin follow up with two rising knee strikes.
        • If Fujin walked at least two steps during Sky Wakka, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the Fujin's knee damaging the opponent's internal organs, dealing over double the original damage and sending them high in the air for a juggle.
  • Wind Barrier: Fujin uses a wall of wind to block the opponent's attack and follow up with certain moves. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Wind Push: Fujin thrusts forward with his fist and creates a gust of wind that pushes the opponent away from him. This move can be used at normal, close and far range, called Close/Far Wind Push, respectively. This ability replaces Krossbow Blast when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin knock the opponent away with another gust.
      • If Fujin has hit the opponent with all three versions of Wind Push during the match, the amplified version turns into a Krushing Blow, where the wind blast crushes the opponent's ribs, dealing increased damage.
  • Air Slam: Fujin catches the airborne opponent with a wind funnel and slams them down to the ground. This ability replaces Krossbow Blast when equipped and conflicts with Airsenal and Twister when equipped, disabling the option to select Airsenal or Twister. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the move has Fujin lift the opponent in the air and launch them high upwards, allowing him to follow up with a juggle.
  • Jet Stream: Fujin gathers a wind stream around himself that extends the reach of his attacks. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Pressure Bomb: Fujin creates a pocket of unstable air that travels forward and explodes, sending the opponent in the air for a juggle. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Turbulence: Fujin creates a wind vortex in the air that alters the opponent's jumps. (MK11 - Equip Ability)

Fatal Blow

  • Winds of Change: Fujin hits the opponent with a gust of wind and tosses his sword at them. The sword hits their shoulder and hovers in the air while Fujin riddles the opponent with crossbow bolts, sending the last one in the head. The sword flies towards Fujin and pierces the opponent with the back while Fujin leaps upwards, drives the weapon into the opponent's head and knocks them away with a wind blast. (MK11)

Other Moves:

  • Throw (Forward): Fujin knees the opponent in the gut, and once they gasp in pain, he pulls the air out of their lungs, condenses it and strikes them away with it. (MK11)
    • If Fujin performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the wind gust breaking the opponent's ribcage, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Backward).
  • Throw (Backward): Fujin creates a tornado that keeps the opponent spinning in the air, pulls out his crossbow and shoots them in the head. (MK11)
    • If Fujin performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the crossbow bolt going through the opponent's head and causing blood to splatter, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Forward).
  • Overhead Slash: Fujin draws his kusanagi in an overhead swing. This can only be performed during a hop and the attack type is shared with every character. (MK11)
    • If the move connects after Fujin hovers in the air for a short time, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where the sword crushes the top of the opponent's skull, dealing increased damage and sending them in the air for juggle.
    • Equipping Divine Wind enables the Krushing Blow (see below).
  • Gusting Cyclone: Fujin delivers two punches to the opponent's mid-section before knocking them away with a spin kick. (MK11)
    • If this combo is performed on an opponent as a Kounter or Punish, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the final kick crushing the upper half of the opponent's skull inward and sending the opponent to the complete other side of the screen, similar to Rain's Superkick, dealing almost three times the original damage.
  • Whisked Away: Fujin slides towards the opponent and delivers a powerful punch to their chest, knocking them slightly away. (MK11)
    • If the second strike is the first one to actually connect, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, where Fujin crushes the opponent's ribcage with the punch, dealing over double the combo's original damage but over three times the second strikes original damage. The knockback effect remains the same.
  • Krushing Zephyr: Fujin kicks forward and performs a front flip, bringing his foot down on the opponent's head. (MK11)
    • If Fujin connects the final hit twice in a row on its own, whether the opponent fails to block it or it connects on its own, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the overhead kick crushing the top of the opponent's skull, dealing double the original damage of the overhead kick's damage. Fujin is offered the use of special attacks after.
  • Whirlwind: Fujin uses a gust of wind to pull the opponent closer to himself and creates a tornado that keeps them spinning before kicking them away. (MK11)
    • Amplifying the combo while Deadly Winds is equipped has Fujin stab the opponent in the chest with his kusanagi before kicking them away.
      • If this combo is performed on an opponent as a Punish against the opponent's Back Dash, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the sword impaling the opponent and causing blood to splatter, dealing increased damage. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of amplified Tailwind.
  • Tailwind: Fujin smashes the opponent between two walls of wind and creates a tornado around himself that keeps them spinning before kicking them away.
If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of amplified Whirlwind.
  • Airsenal: Fujin gains the ability to use Tornado and Wind Kicks in the air. This ability conflicts with Air Slam when equipped, disabling the option to select Air Slam. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Divine Wind: Fujin uses a stream of air to hover above the ground. This ability conflicts with Sky Wakka when equipped, disabling the option to select Sky Wakka. (MK11 - Equip Ability)

Fatalities

  • Crossbow Kill: After levitating the opponent, Fujin shoots his crossbow at them, causing them to explode. (MK4, MKG)
  • Skinner: Fujin concentrates a huge blast of wind at the opponent that rips their skin clean off.(MK4, MKG)
  • Wind Blade: Fujin draws his blade and releases shearing gusts of wind that cuts off the opponent's arm and leg. Then he flies into the air and fires two waves of high-powered wind at his opponent, slicing off through their torso with a portion of their midsection barely holding them together. He then tosses his sword, impaling them through the hand and the mouth while their body breaks into three parts. (MK11)
  • Twisted Twister: Fujin slices his opponent's gut open, causing an entrail to spill out. He then steps on it as he lifts them in the air with wind and spins them around, letting their intestine wrap around them. Fujin proceeds to then generate a violent twisting torrent around them, slamming against the ground with enough force that it obliterates their torso, leaving their head and limbs scattered in a bloody heap. (MK11)

Brutalities

  • The Klassic: Fujin performs an uppercut, decapitating the opponent with their spine still attached. This Brutality is shared will every character. (MK11)
    • Must not block an attack for the entirety of the final round.
    • A button must be held.
    • Will not trigger on Krushing Blow, if it has not been activated during the match.
  • Heavy Winds: Fujin performs a Throw (Backward), increasing the intensity of its spin before pulling out his crossblow and firing a single bolt that blows the opponent apart. (MK11)
    • Certain buttons must be pressed repeatedly.
    • Will not trigger on Krushing Blow, if it has not been activated during the match.
  • Breathless: Fujin performs a Throw (Forward), using the opponent's stolen breath to blow off their skin. (MK11)
    • A button must be pressed repeatedly.
    • Will not trigger on Krushing Blow, if it has not been activated during the match.
  • Twisted: Fujin performs an amplified Tailwind kombo slicing his opponent afterwards with his sword. After that the front or back part of the opponent's body (depends of their stance) falls down. (MK11)
    • A button must be held.
    • Will not trigger on Krushing Blow, if it has not been activated during the match.
  • Pinned: Fujin performs his Takedown basic attack, then draws his sword that nails the opponent to the ground. (MK11)
    • Must have chest facing the screen.
    • Requires Fujin to be at a certain health level.
  • Up Up And Away: Fujin performs an amplified Air Slam sending the opponent far into the sky. When he performs his Brutality Victory Pose the opponent falls and shatters into pieces. (MK11)
    • A button must be held.
  • Dust In The Wind: Fujin performs a Tornado and creates a wind funnel around the opponent that tears off their skin and keeps them spinning in a tornado. (MK11)
    • Must lose a round.
    • Requires Fujin to be at a certain health level.
    • A button must be held.
  • Winded: Fujin performs his Howling Winds kombo, slicing his opponent vertically in half. (MK11)
    • Fatal Blow must remain active.
    • A button must be held.
  • Alternate Breathless Brutality: Fujin performs his Breathless brutality, only this time he blows off the opponent's skin and flesh to bones, leaving only the skeleton. (MK11 - Secret)
    • Has the same requirements as Breathless.
    • Certain buttons must be held.

Other finishers

  • Friendship - Let's Go Fly a Kite: Fujin produces a Raiden kite and uses his wind powers to fly it, but will occasionally get dragged around by the kite. (MK11)

Game Information

Fujin was written to be Raiden's brother (which is also true for the myths) in Mortal Kombat 4's official strategy guide,[2] although this has not been mentioned in games until Raiden's character trailer for MK11. The character possessed a projectile crossbow weapon in this title, which Ed Boon has stated that he believed was a mistake as it did not fit with the style of the rest of the weapons and the computer AI had a difficult time managing it.[3] Concept art in Armageddon,[4] early video footage of the game,[3] and a screen shot seen in the instruction manual[5] show that Fujin was to have a weapon known as the Wind Staff, described as being an ancient tree branch fitted with "Forest Crystals" and having magical wind energy circling the twigs on the staff's end.[4] However, he would instead be given what was initially Reiko's Devastator sword in the final version.

Fujin makes two small cameo appearances in Mortal Kombat: Deception. In the game's Konquest mode, he can be found in Orderrealm searching for a book that will help him in his defense of Earthrealm.[6] He is also seen as a background prisoner in the Dark Prison stage, along with various other characters.

In Mortal Kombat (2011), Fujin makes a brief appearance in Kratos' ending alongside Raiden. There was a video of a hacker using a basic character model, but once this model is chosen at the character select screen, the announcer says "Fujin", leading many to believe that he would be DLC. Soon enough, though, he was denied by Ed Boon, through Twitter.

Fujin returns in Mortal Kombat X's Story mode, aiding Raiden in defending Earthrealm from Shinnok and the invading Netherrealm forces.

In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin will return as a DLC character for the game and one of the protagonists for the DLC story mode, Aftermath. The bio of Fujin on the game's website has finally confirmed that Fujin is indeed Raiden's brother.

  • "You know the only time Raiden and I ever fought? When I left the Sky Temple to live among humans."
  • ""Do not become attached to them, Fujin. Sentiment will impede the execution of your duty.""
  • "But warriors like you and I... we are strengthened by sentiment. We do not fight to kill enemies. We fight to protect our loved ones. That is why it cuts so deeply when we fail."
  • "Kronika knows your pain. She manipulates you with it."
  • "Jacqueline is on her way here. Kronika expects you to fight her. Worse, even, break her heart."
  • "Is that someone who cares one whit about you or your family?"
  • "Well, Shang Tsung, your strategy proved sound after all."
  • "Yes, and now we must bring this to Raiden."

  • "Now, we can change the outcome of the fight against Kronika. We can defeat her and fix time!"
  • "My brother is my problem. I will signal if I need help." (To Shang Tsung about Raiden's corruption)
  • "Shinnok's Amulet inflames your anger, and clouds your judgement."
  • "Have faith in me."
  • "Now listen, brother." (After defeating Raiden)
  • "We're running out of time."
  • "Not at all, Liu Kang. Raiden's power makes you a Fire God."

Trivia

General

  • With his inclusion as a DLC character and gaining a role in the Story Mode of Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin is the first DLC character to be added to a game's Story Mode and Arcade rather than just being added to the Arcade exclusively.
    • Additionally, he is the fourth of four DLC characters in Mortal Kombat 11 to gain a role in the game's Story Mode, the others being the original Kombat Pack fighters Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Sindel.
      • Skarlet could also fall into these categories, however her original appearance in Mortal Kombat (2011)'s Story Mode were cameo appearances before she made her playable debut later as DLC.

Mortal Kombat 4/Gold

  • Fujin - Fujin (風神) or Futen is the Japanese god of the wind and one of the eldest Shinto gods.
  • If Fujin's crossbow has been dropped or thrown, performing his Crossbow Kill Fatality will cause Fujin to produce a second crossbow.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

  • In early versions of Armageddon, Mian Chuan and Hapkido were supposed to be his unarmed fighting style. He was also going to have the Wind Staff, before he eventually acquired the Devastator.
  • Fujin uses the Lui He fighting style that Shao Kahn had in Deception.
  • Fujin is the only character whose relic belongs exclusively to his alternate costume.
  • In his Bio Kard, it states that his first appearance was in MK4 but his first actual appearance was in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, despite not being named in the latter.

Mortal Kombat X

  • If the player performs Cassie Cage's Selfie Fatality in Mortal Kombat X, it is possible for a message to appear from user "noobde" (Ed Boon's Twitter account) stating, "Has anyone unlocked Fujin?".
  • There was going to be a scene in the game's Story Mode where Fujin joined Jax and the Special Forces in the Netherrealm to await D'Vorah but the scene was cut due to time.[7]

Mortal Kombat 11

  • Being mentioned in intro dialogues between Cetrion, Frost, & Raiden, Fujin is attacked by the former two. Promising not to go down easily, Fujin is nonetheless frozen by Frost, presumably killing him.
    • Through his intros with Frost and Geras, it is confirmed that Kronika sent the pair to kill Fujin, but he managed to escape. The Titaness herself then made her offer to the Wind God, and, after his denial, trapped him in the same Time Void Shang Tsung and Nightwolf were, as the start of Aftermath confirms.
  • Fujin returns to the franchise as a playable character after a nearly 14 year absence, this time returning as a playable character and having a role in the Aftermath Story Mode DLC.
  • Fujin's appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 is frequently compared to Vergil from the Devil May Cry series. Both are siblings of a main protagonist, wielding a sword with a style akin to iaijutsu and having slicked back hair as well as a disposition opposite to their brother. Though in this case, Fujin's character is closer to Dante's than Vergil's.
    • This comparison was noted upon by Stephanie Brownback during the character's Kombat Kast showcase, calling him "looking very motivated", one of Vergil's more famous catchphrases.
  • The last image of Fujin's ending is a reference to the famous "The Last Supper", which pictured Jesus Christ dining together with his apostles before his cruxification.
    • As a bonus, Shang Tsung is positioned where Judas Iscariot is usually depicted in various images.
  • Fujin and Scorpion are the only Mortal Kombat 11 characters to have a Fatality that requires a Far Distance with Wind Blade and You’re Next respectively.
  • Intros with Jax, Jacqui and Scorpion reference the deleted scene from MKX where Fujin helped Jax fight Shinnok's forces whilst awaiting D'Vorah.
