The Dragon marking is an addition to the 2021 film Mortal Kombat in which it was tied into Earthrealm Champion's Arcana.
Overview[]
To access the Arcana, a dragon marking is needed as they a dragon marking and Arcana are essentially a replacement for "powers", which just came naturally to most of the characters in the games.
The mark is tied to death as if an Earthrealm champion is killed, his or her Dragon marking will pass to the one who kill him or her, becoming the new champion; if the Earthrealm champion dies by any other cause, the mark will pass down his or her lineage from the first-born to the second-born and so on. If there are no descendants left, then the mark will vanished along with the bloodline.[1]
Someone from a bloodline that passes down the marking can get theirs prematurely by killing someone who already has one. For instance, in the 2021 film universe, by killing someone with a dragon mark, Cassie Cage would be able to get her own before Johnny dies. [2]
Dragon markings are only tied to Earthrealm fighters. Bi-Han is a Cryomancer and not from a pure Earthrealm bloodline, hence he does not possessed a dragon markings yet he is still able to use his freezing ability.[3]
Notes[]
- The Dragon marking is a reference to the Mortal Kombat Logo. Previously, the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation also features MK Logo within the film.
- Cole got his marking from his mother[4] and she most likely died when he was very young, considering Cole describes himself as an orphan.

Since Bi-Han is not pure Earthrealm blood (see MK lore), he wouldn't get one. 2) It's tricky to tell, but Raiden already left in that scene with KL. KL stayed behind to help Cole." / Twitter
