Death Traps made their first appearance in Mortal Kombat: Deception, its handheld port Mortal Kombat: Unchained and then again in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. They are various hazards in certain stages that result in instant death for anyone unfortunate enough to be knocked into them. They showed similarities to Stage Fatalities of previous installments, but could be invoked at any moment during a match, not just after defeating the opponent, making them essentially the Mortal Kombat equivalent of a ring-out.
If a character was in the close vicinity of a Death Trap, the other player could knock them into it, resulting in a grisly death sequence. Although they are called "Death Traps", matches that have more than one round in them will continue even after a Death Trap is triggered.
The Death Traps were signed with a red line in front of them so the player could see where they were.
