Kano himself may not, but a new character very similar to him does.
Kano is a very well-made criminal. I think he would be a great villain for Batman and a rival for Arrow.
Maybe. I really like Kano as a villain, and seeing him as a "good guy" would be new, but maybe not good news.
Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) presents itself as a reboot, feels like a remake, but is actually a continuation. Liu Kang promised that his New Era would be significantly different from previous timelines (the Original and the Alternative), but so far, it feels like we’re just seeing more of the same.
We’re still dealing with familiar villains like Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Bi-Han, Rain, Havik, Nitara, Reiko, and Ermac. Mileena is still part Edenian and part Tarkatan, Baraka is still a Tarkatan, Reptile is without his family, Jerrod is dead, Kung Lao remains arrogant, and Cyrax and Sektor are still robots.
Despite repeating some character arcs, NetherRealm Studios (NRS) did manage to bring fresh perspectives to certain characters. Kitana and Mileena as blood sisters, Raiden as a new Liu Kang, Kenshi as a former Yakuza member, and Geras as Kang’s friend were all brilliant innovations. However, it seems NRS is hesitant to fully embrace a new direction for the series, likely fearing it won’t attract enough attention. Change is inevitable, and innovation is what keeps major companies relevant.
NRS had the opportunity to fully innovate with this game. The beginning, featuring Raiden and Kung Lao as farmer friends, was highly praised and was a brilliant start, despite the first scene showing a failed Shang Tsung making a pact with a mysterious woman—revealed to be Kronika, who should be eternally dead. Later, we find out this Kronika was actually Shang Tsung from a past timeline, where he perceives he defeated Liu Kang and became the Guardian of Time. While this ending promised us a DLC and future story continuation, it was widely criticized.
The multiverse concept in Mortal Kombat is problematic. Why? Because character deaths no longer carry emotional weight or impact the story significantly. If a character like Sindel dies, why care when there are countless other Sindels across different timelines? Just bring in a good Sindel from another timeline to replace her. This feels like NRS jumping on the multiverse bandwagon, which has quickly become overused and uninteresting.
As a devoted fan of the series, I fear we are stuck in the past. Mortal Kombat has shifted from being about defeating a powerful villain or participating in a deadly tournament to save your dimensional plane, to being about gods fighting gods with no emotional weight. NRS can still save the series, but at what cost? Creating yet another timeline? I doubt they can start a story from scratch. Instead, I propose creating an alternative universe where they can start fresh without having to invent another timeline.
As my grandfather always said, “Money brings power, and power makes a man miserable.”

I took a look at the Mortal Kombat storyline page and read things that I, who know a lot about the game's story, didn't know. For an example, Outworld suffered an attack from Netherrealm.
I didn't read the entire page, but there are some pretty inconsistent things there. Whoever wrote the page stated that Dreamrealm and Nightmarerealm are realms in Mortal Kombat, when they were mainly mentioned by DLC characters, who are not part of the main story. Furthermore, I saw that Malebolgia from the Spawn stories is listed as a canonical part of the Mortal Kombat plot, when he is not, at least for now.
The focus of this post is to call for more references and notes on that page, so that things unknown to most people, like Outworld being attacked by Netherrealm, are better explained. It would also be good to rewrite some chapters, like the beginning itself. I always believed that the One Being had created the Elder Gods and the Titans, not that they lived together.
With the release of Mortal Kombat 1 (2023), I saw many fans create couples between the characters. The most famous, of course, were Johnny with Kenshi and Mileena with Tanya. But in my opinion, all of these couples are wrong, despite Mileena and Tanya being canon.
For starters, Johnny and Kenshi. Why did the MK community start creating drawings of them as a romantic couple? Answer: because they had a friendly dialogue. Johnny was only kind when handing Sento over to Kenshi. It was just a gesture of kindness, because even though Sento is a sword from Kenshi's ancestors, Johnny paid for the sword, so Sento is legally Johnny's. But for some reason, people thought that Johnny and Kenshi are gay and secretly love each other.
Now, Mileena and Tanya. I believe this couple is forced, because the first time they are introduced as a couple (MKX), Tanya was probably just using Mileena for her own goals. Her biography reinforces this:
“Like Kitana and Rain, Tanya is an Edenian, a native of a realm konquered by Shao Kahn and merged with Outworld millennia ago. The Edenians have been fighting for independence ever since. Though she's a skilled kombatant, Tanya prefers more subtle means of achieving her goals. More recently she and Rain have allied with the ousted former Outworld empress, Mileena. Tanya and Rain will help Mileena regain her throne in exchange for the creation of a new Edenia. What will become of Tanya's relationship with Mileena thereafter, none can say...”
If you know Tanya, you know that she is used to betraying her allies. Tanya, in previous timelines, was a manipulator. Just like Reiko did in the comics, Tanya was probably sleeping with Mileena to gain her trust. That's what I believe. According to Liu Kang, he saw all the previous timelines and formed the new one with all the "good" aspects. But what does being together with Mileena improve in Tanya's life? In MKX, Mileena seemed to genuinely care about Tanya, so for Mileena, having Tanya as a partner would be a good thing. I thought it was a little forced that they were officially a couple in the new era, because, technically, it doesn't make sense.
The only LGBT+ person who is understandable in the franchise is Kung Jin. He's gay, but being gay isn't the character's focus. Yes, he feared not being accepted among the Shaolin because he was gay, but that was just part of his story. His focus is on saving Kung Lao, his uncle (in MKX, Jin and Lao are cousins - in MK11, Jin is Lao's nephew).
Well, I wanted to talk about that.
Hey, guys! Some time ago, I saw here on this wiki that Mortal Kombat: Special Forces takes place seven weeks or seven months after Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Could anyone confirm this?
The moment he admits himself to be an anarchist, he is definitely a villain.
However, I would more like to see political intrigue between Earthrealm and Outworld. The story of MKX and its comics are my favorite stories in MK, due to the political intrigue between Kotal Kahn and Mileena.
Speaking of Kotal, WHAT AN AMAZING CHARACTER! I just loved him being involved with the Mayans (I don't remember if it's the Mayans, the Incas, or the Aztecs). Him summoning totems and transforming into a black jaguar is incredible! He would be a great RPG character.
It would be an interesting topic. I don't have much to comment, just that if a corrupt Earthrealm ruler attacked Outworld out of "revenge", it would be completely wrong. What is in the past, stays in the past.
The son should not pay for the father's sins.
This can be seen today, in real life, because there are people who believe in "historical debts". In my view, the past is the past and people today should not "pay their historical debt" for something that person's ancestor did in 125 BC or some random historical date.
NOTE: Additionally, there are people who attack the church for things it did centuries ago. I'm not religious, but I'm smart enough to understand that things have changed.
Bi-Han was never a good person. "Ah, but he saved Earthrealm" - yes, but only because he had doomed it when he helped Quan Chi recover Shinnok's Amulet. Bi-Han did no more than his obligation to fix the mistake he made.
The only "good" thing about him is that he was killed "unjustly" by Scorpion. Bi-Han, yes, killed Scorpion when the specter was still human, but he didn't massacre the Shirai Ryu clan.
In Liu Kang's New Era, Bi-Han, for a while, was a good guy. However, he remains corrupt. Between the two past timelines and this new one we are living in, I would say that the new Bi-Han is a better person than his old versions.
It was forced, yes. Kotal in the last game (MKX), was placed as a villain at the end of the game. He only returned to the "good side" because of Jade and because he couldn't be a villain because that would limit Kronika.
Havik is an idiot with blind views of freedom. He wants rights, but forgets that he also has duties.
“Convergence, Supernova!
Blood manipulation (blood, blood, blood)
The difference is notable!
Neither human nor curse
I'm stronger (strong, strong)
Be an example as a brother
It's my duty
As the oldest I swear no, I can't lose
It's what sets me apart from others (others)
A Death Painting: Choso (Choso)”
It depends on the job, but I'm sure John Wick would complete it. If I were his friend, maybe the price would even be free.
Havik died in the MKX comics, as well as in the Battle of Armageddon.
Toji literally exorcised Dagon with pure brute force.
@Groxygarcon1599 It would be nice. More cultural diversity in the game and story. Netherrealm Studios only needs to worry about not stereotyping countries. I'm from South America, Brazil, more specifically. So far, I've only seen Brazilians who either play football or fight capoeira in games. Brazil had a terrible representation in Assassin's Creed 3 and this is still remembered today. If MK's directors bother to study the country that the character will be part of and the culture of that country, that would be more than perfect. There was a manga creator who came here to Brazil just to create a character.
It would also be nice to make social criticisms. For example, an Argentine character could talk about how bad the situation in Argentina is. A Cuban character could talk about the terrors of communism and how Cuba is not a good country. I've been to Cuba, the houses there look like they date back to 1715 and that's not good. People may say "ah, they are preserving the culture and the past", but no. The houses in Cuba are precarious because the government there does not invest in the population. I heard they can't even buy toilet paper there. Here in Brazil, there is a joke that if a Brazilian goes to Argentina with 1 real, he can buy the whole country.
Quite the contrary, MK has many Chinese characters. The problem is that MK's strength levels are very broken. A human, Erron Black, for example, could never beat Kitana or even Drahmim. Instead of more Chinese characters, we need more powerful HUMAN characters.
