Well, it was the combination of the teo that was the problem. So yeah, ultimately separating the eliminates the problem. So you're right.
But that was the point of that timeline sequence where raiden nonstop fight. No matter what, the two get pit against each other. It was self-preserverance for kronika because if the two of them were to work cohesively, it was the biggest threat to the timeline. Which is evident when they came together.
But yes, separate them, eliminate the problem.

Well, essentially there is a god of time, and everytime she writes time a certain way, it doesnt go according to plan. Almost every time her plan is ruined by raiden and liu kang.
So she rewrote the timeline over and over.
Untill she had enough and wanted to rewrite it without raiden and liu kang.
But they were again to meddling so liu kang and raiden realized neither was strong enough on their own, but together they would be. So raiden and liu kang merged. Creatng fire god liu kang.
He then went on to kill kronika god of time, and take control of the hour glass which controlled time. However by then kronika had ended the timeline. So the only thing left to do was to rebuild the timeline.
So he made yet another new timeline
Well it depends what you mean by maintain.
They dont let things go awry. But the beings there can do as they will.
I mean the entire idea of mortal kombat is a set of rules to keep order in the realms and orevent shao kahn from running amuk and conquering.
In that way, they are caretakers
Well the realms arent just planets, their broad planes of existance. Ed boon elaborated on that in an interview. So each realm has its own expandive space.
So that being said it would be watching over complicex planes of existance
Well, the elder gods are in theory in the background caretaking the realms. But their caretaking in mostly just oversight.
Well to be fair the ten victories is supposed to be impossible. Its a rule made to make it unlikely that it will ever occur. Winning ten straight is supposed to be improbable. That was the intent.
The elder gods are neither good nor evil. They only seek balance and order. They're effectively bureaucrats.

But ed boon has confirmed he will not be the only villain or the big bad
